World YWCA Board Communique

From 9 to 11 December, 2015 in Geneva, the new World YWCA Board held its first official meeting since being elected at World YWCA Council 2015.  During our three days together, we continued our Board orientation and confirmed the Board objectives for the quadrennium based on our Envisioning 2035 Goal and our Strategic Framework for the next four years.

ICASA 2015

The World YWCA is participating in this week's ICASA event. The International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Africa (ICASA) is a major international AIDS conference which takes place in Africa. Its current biennial hosting alternates between Anglophone and Francophone African countries. The 2015 ICASA is being held in Harare, Zimbabwe taking place from 29 November – 4 December.

Empowering young women is key to preventing HIV and ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030

In September 2015, Heads of State came together to agree on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which their governments will collectively strive towards over the next 15 years. Within the overarching goal on health issues, Sustainable Development Goal 3, governments have agreed to work to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030.

Religious leaders play key role in ending child marriage

Religious leaders have a huge role to play in ending early, child and forced marriage since many people around the world are guided by their religious beliefs.  This was one of the key discussion points when the YWCA and the African Union convened a meeting on the Role of Religious Communities in Ending Early and Child Marriage. The meeting took place Nov 25 in Lusaka, Zambia, at the first African Girls Summit on ending Child Marriage in Africa.

In Lusaka, Zambia the African Union is hosting the ‘African Girl’s Summit on ending child marriage in Africa’ from the 26-27th November, 2015. The summit will be a two day high level meeting bringing together high level personalities from Member States- First Ladies, high level UN dignitaries, women and girls, civil society organisations including community and religious leaders and other stakeholders with the following objectives:-

28th World YWCA Council Adopts 2035 Vision Goal on “Bold and Transformative Leadership”

The 28th World YWCA Council came to a close on Friday 16th of October 2015, with the adoption of the World YWCA Envisioning 2035 Goal. It was a momentous occasion when YWCA Member Associations rallied around a common vision for the future, with a commitment that:

The 28th World YWCA Council under the theme ‘Bold and Transformative Leadership’ opened on Sunday 11th October at the Centara Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand; it is the largest gathering of YWCA members from all around the world. It is a time for membership engagement, decision-making, reflections and most importantly networking and having fun.
