World YWCA Supports Women and Girls in Science

Today, women and girls often find themselves marginalised and underrepresented in science and technology. This disparity spans everything from the encouragement to enter these fields, to enrollment in higher education programmes, hiring, mentorship, earnings, funding for projects and research, and published articles.

World YWCA Supports Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation

Female Genital Mutilation is a gross violation of human rights for adolescent girls, young women and women. It is traumatic and increases their vulnerability to HIV and AIDs, results in fistula and maternal death due to complications during pregnancy. Today, there are more than 125 million girls and women alive who have experienced FGM across the globe with high prevalence in 29 countries in Africa and the Middle East, and WHO estimates 3 million girls in Africa every year are at risk of FGM.

I am a Girl – Music Video Call for Participation

'I Am a Girl’ is a song about gender equality. It is an anthem to empower women and girls to go after their dreams, without feeling like they have to fit into a stereotype to succeed. The intent of the song and video is to show girls around the world that they are capable of doing anything if they put their minds to it. Music and film have such a powerful influence over us, as they help form our personal identity and subconsciously affect our perception of self-worth. Females, far more than males, are seen and judged for how they look, before they are ever heard. True beauty comes from within. It is time that women are seen for more than just their outer appearances. It is time that women are valued for their intellect, for their character, their determination, their versatility, their creativity, their strength, their vision, and their innovation.
